When We Make Room: Walking With CityHeART Into What Comes Next
When We Make Room: Walking With CityHeART Into What Comes Next

On Monday, August 17, CityHeART paused regular operations at the Resource Hub for two weeks.
This was not an easy decision. CityHeART has spent nearly 11 years learning how to keep showing up. When a gap appears, we have often tried to fill it. When circumstances change, we adapt. When someone walks through the doors, we make room for their story and look for the next useful step together.
Choosing to pause that regular rhythm required honesty.
Over the past several weeks, unexpected challenges have stretched our small team while also asking us to think more deeply about the sustainability of the Resource Hub. We have been considering what it will take to carry this work into 2027, not simply by keeping the doors open in the short term, but by strengthening the foundation underneath the work.
So, for these two weeks, we are creating room.
A pause is not the same as standing still
Regular Resource Hub operations are temporarily paused while we focus on the work that will support the next chapter.
During this time, we are meeting with community partners, welcoming and preparing new students, building our fall programming, connecting with supporters, preparing for Long Beach Gives, and having important conversations about what a sustainable future can look like.
Some of this work happens in visible ways. Some of it happens through conversations, planning meetings, training, introductions, and careful reflection. Not all of it can be measured by how many people enter the Hub on a given day. Much of what sustains a community space begins before the doors open.
This pause gives us time to ask important questions:
- What does the Resource Hub need in order to remain steady and welcoming?
- How can we build a structure that does not depend on a handful of people exhausting themselves?
- What partnerships, resources, and shared responsibilities will help the Hub continue to serve as a place for food access, resource connection, healing, creativity, and belonging?
- How can we make sure the people who walk through our doors are met with care that is consistent, respectful, and rooted in relationship?
These are practical questions. They are also questions about values.
We do not want the Hub to remain open only because a few people are willing to stretch beyond their limits. We want it to be open because a community has decided that what happens when people walk through those doors matters.

Keeping a Thursday connection
While regular operations are paused, we are maintaining a limited Thursday presence so emergency food support can continue.
This Thursday, the HeARTy Foods Free Grocery Market will be available at 12:00 PM. Afterward, neighbors can stay for fresh groceries, conversation, and community.
CityHeART Radio: The Show! will also be on from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, keeping connection and shared voice part of the day.
Food distribution is an important part of what happens at the Resource Hub, but it is not the whole story. A grocery market can also be a place where people recognize one another, exchange information, ask questions, share what they know, and spend a little time in a space where they are treated with dignity.
That is why we are keeping this Thursday connection in place. Emergency food support matters, and so does the human connection that can grow around it.

The Hub has been active in a different way
Even with regular operations paused, CityHeART has been anything but still.
Volunteers have stepped into gaps we could not fill alone. Students have arrived ready to learn and contribute. Community partners have asked thoughtful questions about what comes next. People have shared our work, offered their time, brought ideas, made introductions, given what they could, and stayed present.
These actions may look different from a full schedule at the Hub, but they are part of the same work.
A volunteer offering a skill, a student preparing for a new role, or a partner making an introduction can all contribute to the strength of a shared space. None of these acts stands alone. Together, they help us understand what community care can look like when it is based on mutuality rather than rescue.
The question we have heard most often is simple:
“How can I walk with you?”
That question has meant more than you may know.
It does not assume that CityHeART has all the answers. It does not place the responsibility for the future on one organization or one person. Instead, it opens a conversation about how we can move forward together.
Stories to be told, not problems to be fixed
The Resource Hub exists for people whose lives hold many different experiences. Veterans, seniors, families, people experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, domestic violence survivors, students, volunteers, artists, neighbors, and partners all bring knowledge and perspective into the space.
We do not believe people are defined by the circumstances that bring them to the Hub. Each person arrives with a history, a set of strengths, relationships, hopes, questions, and choices that belong to them.
Our role is not to write anyone else’s story for them. Our role is to help create conditions where people can connect with resources, explore healing, share their creativity, and remain connected to their own agency.
That is part of what we mean when we say, “We invest in your story.”
We invest in the belief that your experiences matter. We invest in spaces where your voice is not reduced to a form, a referral, or a single need. We invest in the possibility that support can be practical and relational at the same time.

What it means to walk with us
There is no single way to be part of this next chapter.
You might share CityHeART’s work with someone who has not heard about the Resource Hub. You might introduce us to a community partner, case manager, social worker, educator, artist, funder, or neighbor who wants to learn more.
You might join us for a day, offer a skill, volunteer through an upcoming opportunity, or ask how your experience could support the work. You might give what you can, whether through a one-time contribution or ongoing support. You might stay close, read our updates, attend an event, or simply pay attention to what we are building together.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can visit our Get Involved page. If you would like to explore financial or in-kind support, visit Support Our Mission or Give to CityHeART.
These invitations are not a request for you to save CityHeART. They are an invitation to come closer, ask questions, and consider whether there is a meaningful way for us to share responsibility for the kind of community space we want to sustain.
Making room for 2027
We do not know whose story will knock on the door next year.
We do know that people will continue to need places where they can access food, connect with resources, make art, receive support, and be met as whole human beings. We know that students will continue to learn through proximity and participation. We know that volunteers and partners will bring knowledge that can strengthen the work. We know that a sustainable Resource Hub will require more than good intentions and individual sacrifice.
It will require planning. It will require resources. It will require honest conversations and shared investment. It will require us to remain accountable to the people and communities connected to the Hub.
That is what this pause is for.
We are making room for the conversations, structures, relationships, and decisions that can help the Resource Hub remain present for the stories still to come.

We are writing what comes next together
A pause can feel unfamiliar when you are used to constant motion. It can be tempting to measure progress only by visible activity. But some of the most important work happens when we slow down enough to notice what is needed beneath the surface.
Right now, we are choosing that kind of attention.
We are listening to our partners. We are learning from our students and volunteers. We are preparing for the months ahead. We are taking the sustainability of the Resource Hub seriously because the people who walk through its doors deserve a space that is built to last.
Thank you for staying close.
Thank you for asking how you can walk with us.
Thank you for sharing your time, questions, ideas, introductions, generosity, and presence. However you are connected to CityHeART, you are part of the conversation about what comes next.
We do not know every detail of the next chapter yet. We are making room to discover it together, strengthening the foundation so the doors can open when the next story arrives.
We are writing this story together.
